BASICS OF FITNESS AND TEAM SPORTS

Duration:Two Semesters - 1 Credit
Description:This course is designed to provide each individual the opportunity to develop and maintain physical fitness, motor skills, creativity, social interaction and intellectual competency. Another purpose of the course is to reduce the level of physical stress which a student builds up during the school day. A unit of health and nutrition will be included each semester.
FITNESS AND TEAM SPORTS

Duration:Two Semesters - 1 Credit
Description:This course is designed to provide each individual the opportunity to develop and maintain physical fitness, motor skills, creativity, social interaction and intellectual competency. Its purpose is also to relieve the physical pressures a student endures during the school day. This course and the seventh grade science course inter-relates both health and nutrition units.
ADVANCED FITNESS AND TEAM SPORTS
PED 830 or PE 830B for Band students

Duration:Two Semesters - 1 Credit
Description:This course concentrates three days each week on a specific unit (game or sport-related activity), and two days each week on health and fitness activities. Students are taught basic skills and knowledge related to the appropriate unit.

HIGH SCHOOL COURSES
FITNESS AND NUTRITION
PED 130
Level: 9
Duration:One Semester - ½ Credit
Description:This class provides the freshmen with the opportunity to improve both physically and mentally. This class takes place in the weight room and on the track. In the weight room students perform exercises that improve balance, power, raw speed, core strength, and sport-specific strength. On the track students perform drills that improve quickness, measurable speed, and sport-specific speed. Students talk about nutrition and how it affects the ability to function both physically and mentally. Students will learn to find a balance between exercise and nutrition in order to reach their maximum potential. Students who work hard in this class will learn self-discipline, increase overall strength, improve both quickness and speed, and see tremendous growth in one’s self-esteem.
LIFESAVING, CPR AND FIRST AID
PED 230Level:: 10
Duration:One Semester - ½ Credit
Description:This class provides sophomores with the opportunity to experience individual and team skills that help develop and maintain physical fitness, creativity, social efficiency, and worthy use of leisure time. Students are introduced to a select group of skills and knowledge in team and individual sports. Students will take American Red Cross life guarding, first aid and CPR. Health and nutrition units will be integrated into the First Aids and CPR units.

Description:Students in this class will participate in a variety of physical fitness activities, individuals sports and team sports. Through these activities, students will maintain and increase physical fitness, motor skills and game skills. This class will include testing of skills and testing of knowledge pertaining to team and individual sports.
Health and nutrition units are including in this semester course.
WEIGHT TRAINING I

Duration:One Semester - ½ Credit
Description:Students who enroll in this elective course should be prepared to work out each and every class period. This course will be a combination of strength and power work in the weight room; speed and agility work on the track; and, the study of nutrition in the classroom. Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of how to train intelligently. This course is for students who wish to improve their strength, speed, self-discipline, and self-esteem. Students discuss nutrition and its affect on the ability to function both physically and mentally. Students will learn to find a balance between exercise and nutrition in order to reach their maximum potential.
WEIGHT TRAINING II

Duration:One Semester - ½ Credit
Description:Students who enroll in this elective course should be prepared to work out each and every class period. Students who enroll in this class must have successfully completed Weight Training I and must have the approval of the instructor. This class will focus on improving techniques for all Olympic lifts; learning advanced program building; obtaining a better understanding of nutrition requirements; and developing a tougher mental approach.
Students discuss nutrition and its affect on the ability to function both physically and mentally. Students will learn to find a balance between exercise and nutrition in order to reach their maximum potential.
ENDURANCE SPORTS

Duration:One Semester - ½ Credit
Description:Students enrolled in this class should have an interest in learning about endurance sports; including distance running (5Ks 10Ks, Half Marathons, Marathons), distance bicycling (road racing), distance swimming, and triathlons. This is a course for students who wish to improve their knowledge of endurance sports training. Classroom time will be devoted to the practical aspects pertaining to training, race planning, fueling, equipment, and equipment repair. Class time will also be devoted to training for endurance sports. Students will train in running, swimming and biking. Students should acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in an endurance sporting event. Opportunities to participate in several endurance sporting events will be presented to the students. Field trips will be incorporated into the class curriculum. Students discuss health and nutrition as it relates to their training and fueling during endurance events.
