Description: The 2nd year Chinese (Mandarin) course continues with Huanyin text. The students will learn more complex grammar concepts and 150-180 additional characters with their combinations to build a solid foundation in pronunciation, character writing and grammar. Students will practice and develop proficiency in four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), all the while further exploring Chinese culture. Class participation by utilizing the target language is encouraged to prepare for real-life situations.

Description: An immersion teaching strategy will be reinforced in the 3rdyear Chinese (Mandarin) course to develop and strengthen proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The students will learn complex grammar concepts, 250-300 characters (with combinations) and extended culture competency. More complicated assignments will be used to prepare students for college level Chinese study.

Verbs tenses used in French 1 are continued while introducing some irregular verbs, the passé compose, and the imperfect tense. All simple verb tenses are reviewed and compound tenses are added. The text Une fois pour toutes is used to hone grammatical skills. Class is conducted in French and students are expected to use only French in the classroom.

Description: This course is designed as a culmination of students’ French studies in high school. In AP French, students will prepare to take the AP French Language & Culture Exam. They will do this by reviewing and refining previously studied grammatical structures while learning new vocabulary to communicate in French on a variety of topics. The texts Allons au-delà and AP French: Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination are used in addition to a wide variety of authentic texts, videos and podcasts. AP French emphasizes all aspects of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course will be conducted exclusively in French.

Description: This course is intended to be an introductory course in Classical and Koine Greek. It is intended to enable students to read relatively easy Classical and Koine Greek sentences. The students will be exposed to Classical authors as well as to the Greek text of the New Testament. In addition to language and grammar, this course will address the culture of Ancient Greek and its continuing influence on today’s society.

Description: This course is a continuation of Greek I. Students are introduced to more difficult Greek grammar. Description: Seventh graders are required to take a full year of Latin using the second edition of the Latin Oxford Course. Students are gradually introduced to the grammar and vocabulary of the Latin language, while learning about the history, culture, and myths of ancient Rome through supplementary readings. The storyline follows the daily life and adventures of Quintus Horatius Flaccus and his family.

Description: This course is designed primarily for incoming eighth and ninth graders who did not take LAT 730, and who must catch up with their peers. This will prepare students to continue their Latin studies in high school or to take high school level courses in one of the modern languages.

Description: This course is composed of readings from Latin originals (Eutropius, Aesop, Cicero, Caesar, Asconius, and Petronius.) The historical/cultural focus begins with the Roman political system and history from Marius through Augustus, continues with Cicero’s influence during political crises and confrontations that turned violent, examines Julius Caesar as the supreme figure of the late Republic, follows the rise of a new imperial culture, and gives us glimpses into the real lives of the Roman population.

There will be class discussions covering the models of leadership in each work, as well as the historical, cultural, and literary nature of the material. Quizzes and tests will be designed to expose students to the types of questions they will encounter on the AP exam.

Description: This course is a continuation of Spanish 3 and is designed for students who wish to continue language study, but are not recommended for, or do not wish to take the Advanced Placement Spanish language course. Students will be in involved in a comprehensive yet detailed review of the principles of the Spanish language as they manifest themselves in the various skills of linguistic practice: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Included will be vocabulary, grammar (tenses and sentence structure) and phonetics (sound production and recognition). Student should establish and solidify a mature and certain understanding of the complexities of the Spanish language and thereby increase their facility and comfort with same. The Interacciones textbook is used.

Description: This course prepares students for the optional AP Spanish Language Exam. The class will be conducted completely in the target language. The four language skills are refined. All verb tenses and major grammar structures are studied and/or reviewed. Grammar is used creatively to write compositions, to participate in discussions and to understand fiction and non-fiction works. The ultimate goal of this course is to engender in the student the confidence and desire to utilize the foreign language as a means of oral communication in every day social circumstances. Success in the skills of listening comprehension and speaking will establish the bedrock of the student’s enthusiasm for the subject matter. The Abriendo paso textbook is used.
