I.  Course Description:

This course is designed:

  • To bring students quickly to the point where they can read the Latin of classical authors with confidence.
  • To develop awareness of the culture of the Romans, its historic significance, and its contemporary relevance.
  • To enhance their general language learning techniques and aptitudes, including facility with English.
  • To develop the student’s full intellect by strengthening their skills of reasoning, interactive learning, comparative analysis, and critical assessment.

II.  Methodology:

Students will learn Latin by actually reading it and discovering for themselves the shapes of words and the structure of phrases, clauses, sentences and paragraphs.  They will follow the daily life and adventures of the Cornelii, a typical Roman family in the years AD 80-81, and the readings will familiarize them with Roman culture at the same time that they build rapid facility with the Latin language.  “Authentic” Latin is introduced in a variety of forms including sententiae, graffiti, inscriptions, and short passages from Latin authors.

III.  Texts:  Ecce Romani I and Workbooks (Language Activity Books I-A and I-B)

IV.  Laptop Usage:  It is expected that students will bring their laptops to class for drill and practice; in addition, they will do many homework assignments on laptops.

V.  Grading:  Grades will be calculated as follows:  30% - tests and projects; 20% - quizzes: 30% - class participation and behavior; 20% - homework completion.
