Chaminade Percussion Handbook

Mission Statement: The purpose of the percussion program is to educate the student in Total Percussion so that he can successfully participate in band and percussion ensemble. In addition, the student should be able to learn time management skills applicable to any class or life situation he may choose to study later in life.
Requirements: Students will be required to provide a stick bag with his own sticks and mallets. Please check the list later in this handbook for specific requirements for each grade level. Students must bring the required stick bag to every class. Students are required to practice at home 120 minutes per week, preferably 20 minutes per night for six nights. Class time is used for rehearsing what the students have practiced and to learn how his part fits with the rest of the ensemble.
Class Format: The two primary instruments that we will study are snare drum and keyboard mallets. Students will uncover mallet instruments or get out practice pads quickly and quietly. The class will begin by reviewing the assigned material and then introducing the material to be practiced that night. Afterwards, music for band will be rehearsed, followed by percussion ensemble music. Music for these pieces will be assigned by the instructor and no student will perform exclusively on one instrument. Due to the music that we play, student will most often play a keyboard percussion instrument. At the conclusion of the rehearsal, the room will be put back in the condition that the students found it. Failure to cover instruments or put away pads will result in the entire class losing one point off of their final semester grade.
Instrument requirements: Students must have a keyboard percussion instrument and snare drum or practice pad at home to practice. Failure to provide instruments at home will negatively impact the student’s progress as it is difficult for students to get practice time on the instruments after school. Following is a list of the sticks and mallets that students are required to purchase. The student may provide his own sticks or mallets, or he can purchase them through the school.

The Middle School Band Curriculum offers Beginning Band for students learning to play an instrument for the first time and Intermediate Band for students with one or more years of experience on an instrument. These bands meet every day during the school day. There is also an extra-curricular Middle School Jazz Band which meets two days a week; once before school and once after school.
The High School Band Curriculum offers Beginning Band for students learning to play an instrument for the first time, Concert Band for students with one or more years of experience on an instrument, and Symphonic Band for more advanced players and upper-classmen. These classes meet every other day for 90 minutes each. The jazz program at the high school level includes Jazz Band I and Jazz Band II.   These classes meet several times each week before and after school.  In addition, Chaminade offers Jazz Combo I and Jazz Combo II as extracurricular ensembles which also meet before and after school.
